NORTH AMERICAN PLATE

The North American Plate covers most of Canada, United States, Greenland and parts of Cuba and Iceland.  This plate began to form around 3 billion years ago to include both continental and oceanic crust. It is one of the major seven plates covering a surface area of around 75 900 000 kilometers squared (making it the second largest plate boundary) and moves around 2.3cm southwest per year.

Notable Features:

  • San Andres Fault: This is a transform boundary between the North-American and Pacific Ridge

  • Mid-Atlantic Ridge: A divergent boundary separating North American and Eurasian plate
